Things I Don’t Like About the New Flat…

Nothing is perfect, right? So what don’t I like about our new flat?

The bathroom floor in the ensuite is blue. So no matter how often I mop/sweep it, it never looks clean to me. One dropped spot of water (and really, how do you get out of the shower and not drip water on the floor?) and you can see it against the blue after it dries.

Our kitchen sink is even shallower than the old one. I didn’t think that was even possible. It is a bit wider, but not deep enough at all.

On the one hand I adore our bare floors. I have always liked the hardwood floor look. But it needs constant attention, whether sweeping or hoovering. That I don’t like.

The land lord keeps forgetting to notify us about the change of the code on the front entrance door. Haven’t gotten one yet for tomorrow. Should be fun getting into the building tomorrow.

Black kitchen floor. See blue bathroom floor above.

So, overall I adore this place. Its just little things that get to me.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

No, I’ve not had any green beer. Or any beer. I had a lovely glass of wine last night, though.

Spent the morning cleaning the flat. Going to spend the afternoon putting together our new piece of furniture and putting things away. Maybe we’ll be unpacked by the time we have to decide if we’re moving again. That’ll be next January.

In other news, I see my psychiatrist tomorrow. I haven’t seen him in about 3 years. I think it was just after Simon and I got married that he released me back to my GP for meds monitoring. So very different here than in the US. In the US I would have seen him non-stop. And probably a psychologist also. I think I had one psychology session ages ago here in the UK.

I think about finding a private therapist, but its very expensive in order to just go and talk to someone. NHS won’t cover it. At least, not long term.

We’ll see what he says tomorrow. I think I do need to be back on meds, just not sure what kind. Too many ‘bad’ days lately. Better living through chemistry, indeed.

Ode to a Luggage Carrier…

About 20 years ago I inherited a gray plastic and metal collapsible luggage carrier from my step-dad.  I have no idea where he got it, but it couldn’t have cost more than $20 20 plus years ago.

It has been on airplanes, after hauling luggage.  It has hauled dirty laundry to the laundry room.  It hauled our old washing machine at our old flat to the curb for pick up.  It has hauled flat packed bookcases from car to house.

Today we used it to haul three flat pack modular units from Argos to the flat, about 4 blocks, to add to our furniture collection.  And I noticed that it is finally broken.  One of the pieces seems to have snapped in half.  It managed to haul the units home, but once they are no longer attached I think it will be time to trash the trusty old thing.

I doubt I will ever find anything as good to replace it.  It has truly prevailed.

Good bye old plastic and metal luggage carrier.  I will miss you. 🙂

More About the New Flat

The kitchen is big enough that Simon can stick the kettle on and make a coffee and I can make toast and pour juice at the same time.

The bedroom is big enough that even though I was running a bit late this morning, we did not get each other’s way while he got ready for his shower and I finished getting dressed.

The lounge is big enough that we both have plenty of room for our toys  (get your minds out the gutter, I mean our action figures).

The big sofa is big enough for Simon to lie full out.  All 6’2″ of him.

The bathtub is long enough and deep enough to cover me to my chin.

We are very happy here.

So, What Don’t I Like About Belfast?

Other than the aforementioned lack of customer service?

I don’t like the fact that, it seems, nothing is easy.  And I mean nothing.

We had trouble with our boiler this past weekend.  Called the landlord’s agent.  No answer, no emergency number listed.  Called a boiler repairman ourselves. Paid £60 that we had better get back.

Had more trouble with the boiler on Monday.  Called the landlord’s agent.  Was told they would get in touch with the landlord and get back to us.  That happened about 3 hours later.  Why can’t we just call the landlord directly?

This building is run badly.  One agent rented us the flat.  One agent represents our landlord now that the flat is rented.  One agent runs the building.  Virgin Media guy was here Monday.  Needed into the cupboard down the hall to flip a switch, or something like that, it was locked.  I call Simon and ask him to call the landlord’s agent  (his is the only name on the lease, so he has to do it) and ask how we get into that cupboard.  They can’t tell us, call the building management.  Oh, says the building management, the concierge is in the building somewhere, he has the key.  Do you have a phone number? No, but his office is in the basement.  Robyn heads to basement, just happens to run into the Concierge.

Need the front door buzzer hooked into our phone number, so guests can be let in (interesting fact, there is no key for the front door of the building, it is a code instead.  Kinda cool).  Simon calls the building management, talks to some crazy person who makes no sense as to what we need to do.  So I call.  Speak to a woman who sounds about 12.  You’re leasing? Yes.  Then your landlord needs to call to confirm that it is okay to hook your phone into the security system.  And its £25.

Do you know what would help?  A small document, given to all new tenants, saying who to contact for what.  Like hotels do, ya know?

So it seems that Belfast’s raison d’etre is to make things as difficult as possible.  Makes me insane.

Live! From the New Flat! Its Tee!

So here we are!

My new flat has:

A dishwasher.
A real live thermostat for the heat. No more area heating.
Really nice furniture, although the leatherish couches could use a scrub.
Pretty drapes and finials on the curtain rails.
THREE BEDROOMS!!!
Dark slate tile in the kitchen.
Laminate hardwood look floors in the lounge, dining area and bedrooms.
Light slate tile along the hallway.
Wide enough hallway to hold some bookcases.
A brand new gas hob and electric oven with separate grill.
6 person dining table and 6 chairs.
Very comfy bed. Simon thinks its too hard, but I like it.
Recessed halogen lighting through out.
Plenty of electric outlets.
Cable hook ups for 3 TVs (although we’ll only use the one in the lounge, its nice that we have the option in each of the bigger bedrooms).
A tub that is actually longer and deeper than our other one, which was long enough and deep enough for me to soak up to my chin!

What we still need are some more bookcases, a washer/dryer (there was a washer here, but the landlord wouldn’t put in a washer/dryer, so they took the washer out and we’re going to buy our own. Yeah, Mom, I forgot to tell you that. Sorry.), another towel rail in the en suite bathroom (what is with these flats and only one small towel rail? Are married couples not suppose to lease them? Or are they suppose to be so in love they only use one towel? YUCK!), a microwave oven and some other odds and ends.  We are also less than pleased with the fact that the kitchen sink is even shallower than the one in the old flat, which we didn’t think was possible.  Obviously people who live in City Centre aren’t suppose to actually cook in their kitchens.

Moving is Interesting

We’ve spent all day today packing. We move in 6 days.

The strangest thing is the refrigerator. We use it as a Rogues Gallery of pictures, mostly of our nieces and nephews, of which we have 12, in an ever changing display. I packed all of those pictures today. Now there is just a blank ‘fridge. Its kinda disconcerting, actually.

There are boxes everywhere, empty bookshelves, blank walls. I have no full length mirror to check my look over the next week. Although I keep glancing at that section of wall, expecting it to be there. All that meets me is wall.

I took my last bath in our current bathtub today. Its a great tub, very deep, I can soak up to my chin, fully covered all the way to my feet. I doubt the new one is as deep.

I told Simon I was feeling a bit sad. He looked at me like I’m nuts, since I have been bitching about this flat for over a year. But this flat has some great memories. A big group of my family eating Chinese in the lounge a few days before my wedding. The same group eating Fish and Chips in the same place a few days later. Simon and I curled up on the sofa watching movies. Good times.

I really can’t wait to move. But we’ve been here for 4 and half years. That’s all of our married life.

Bye flat. See you in the funny papers.

Moving Sucks

So Simon and I spent the day packing.  Its maybe 60% done at this point.  Most of the books are in boxes, with the rest scheduled for tomorrow.  Then I want to pack up the kitchen and use the stuff that came with our (furnished) flat so it will be done and dusted.

I predict it will all be packed by the end of next weekend.

I am totally shattered.  I usual nap on Sunday afternoons but didn’t get to today.

Think it will be an early to bed night.  So I’ll probably be up at 5:30.  Yay!

The Saga of the Flat

So Simon and I are getting ready to move.  We’ve been looking for a 3 bedroom flat in Belfast, to upgrade from our tiny little 2 bed.

Just before Christmas a few flats came up on Propertynews  and we figured no one would look at them before Christmas, so we waited and called as soon as we got home from our Christmas at Simon’s parents.

We went to see one flat, number 604.  Only when we got there, 604’s keys were not with the estate agent, so we saw 606 instead, which was ‘exactly the same’, but already had a let agreed.  We loved it.  3 big bedrooms, large lounge, the kitchen I practically dream of, DISHWASHER!!!  So when can we see 604?  Monday.  Great, here’s our application and fee.  So I tell boss I’ll be in late Monday so I can see flat.

Get there Monday, still don’t have the keys for 604, do you want to see 606 again? Sure.  So we saw it again, with another bloke who was interested in it, only he needed to bring his partner back to see it also.  So when can we see 604? Tuesday.  For sure? We’ll call you to confirm, but pretty much yes.

I get to work, tell boss I need to be in late again Tuesday.

Tuesday, we’re waiting for the Estate Agent when he calls Simon to tell him he still doesn’t have the keys to 604.  We’ll call you.

Robyn has a hissy fit in the middle of the street.  Just *so* typically Belfast.

Thursday, Simon gets a call.  Application has been accepted, only landlady has decided to let flat to her brother.  But 606 is *still* available.

We go see it again.  We still love it.  We wrote them a cheque.

We move in 2nd February 2008.
