Piece of Advice for All of You DIYers Out There…

If you are having trouble making a hole in a wall with your cordless drill, switch out the battery.

Thank you.

In other news, great craic last night. Wound up being only 6 of us, instead of the 15 I originally booked the table for. We had a great time.

Was me, our Building Manager, our regular Accounts Manager (the one who is on maternity leave), the CEO, the Operations Manager, and my old boss. After dinner CEO and Operations Manager left and me and BM and AM and old boss closed the restaurant/club we started at.

We then went to an after hours club. I left after about 10 minutes. Too loud. Too hot. And looked exactly like the warehouse club at the beginning of the first Blade movie. Ya know, where all these people are dancing to techno and then suddenly the sprinklers start spraying blood and the vampires attack and then Blade attacks? Yeah, just like that.

It was *so* good to see my old boss. I miss him tremendously, which myself and AM kept telling him over and over. Unfortunately he is really unhappy at his new job, so it wasn’t a good move at all. Totally sucks when that happens.

So danced, and drank a bit. Talked, laughed, had a fabulous time. And got home at 0145. And then got up at 0730 so I could go get my hair cut at 0900. So yeah, lunch and then back to bed!!!

Tonight We Will Have Our First House Guests

Simon’s parents have something or other to do in Belfast tomorrow, so they are staying with us tonight.  Its the first time they’ve been down since we  moved.  Even though we’ve invited them many times.

I am making goulash and noodles and crusty bread for dinner.  Maybe a salad as well.  Maybe not!

So we’ll give the place a brush up today, get the spare room all nice and pretty and await their arrival.

Our first house guests!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once More, With Feeling

Okay, let’s try these pictures again, shall we?

The hallway after you first come through the front door of the flat: –

At the end of the hall there are some of my masks,  I have quite a few.

This is the hall bathroom, which is the first door on the left as you enter the flat: –

Nice, big, deep tub.  Shower too!

The next door on the left is our bedroom: –

If you look very carefully, just past the second set of pillows, you will see my dragon.  Her name is Isabella Francesca.  I got her a few weeks ago.  She is green and purple with silver fingernails.  I may take a closer picture of her later.

Another thing to note in the above picture:  There are, above our bed, two pictures that are exactly the same.  They are prints of a Georgia O’Keefe flower, framed identically.  I bought them at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.  I framed them the same and posted one to Simon when I was in San Francisco and he was in Belfast.  Now they hang side by side.  (they hang a bit crooked because I used existing hooks…man are the walls *hard* in this place!)

The next picture is the view from the other side of the bed: –

That’s my dresser, which I use as a dressing table.  You can also see the very nice, big jewelry box that Simon bought me as a gift one year.  I love that thing.

And the other side of the room: –

Where the stereo lives!  That door straight ahead is to: –

Our ensuite bathroom.  I deliberately didn’t shoot the floor, but trust me, its blue. The shower is to the left and the toilet to the right.  That glass shelf with the towel rack Simon and I installed ourselves.

This is the view from the door of the Master Bedroom down the hall to the lounge: –

On the top of the shelves to the right you can see some of my puzzle globes.

The first door on the left is: –

The library.  All that bedding on the bed is new as of yesterday.  I was in Primark and found a duvet set, with sheet and pillow case, for about £7.  And a duvet for £4.  And its pink because I expect the only person who will ever stay in there will be my nieces.  And they love pink!

If you stand with your back to that bed and look to your left you will see: –

A set of bookcases.  Look, there is *actually* room for more books!  Those pictures at the top are of my nieces and nephews.

And the other side of the room: –

More bookcases! Hence being the library.  On top of those are my baseball caps.

The next door down the hall to the left is the guest bedroom: –

I have no idea why that duvet is so lumpy…anyway it is completely coincidental that the duvet cover actually matches the curtains.  We brought the duvet cover with us, the curtains were already there.  And that picture on the wall? Its a chicken.  That was already here!

Here is the view to the foot of the bed: –

Wait, you mean you and Simon have even *more* bookcases? Why yes, yes we do!

Next up is the view from the lounge door back to our bedroom: –

More masks on the right there.  And another shot of my globes!

And then you enter the lounge: –

This is what you see when you look left.  Well, Simon isn’t always there, but a lot of the time!

And when you look right: –

The dining area.  And a bit of the kitchen.

And here are our new wall units: –

Look! All my pretties are out!  And that curved shelf is my perfume bottle collection.

And finally, the kitchen: –

Isn’t it pretty?

I hope you enjoyed the tour.  Come back and see me sometime!!

Oh.My.God.

I just unpacked the last three boxes.  Its really truly done.

Still a few things to rearrange, but I will do that tomorrow, since it is May Day Bank Holiday tomorrow and I am off work.

Once that is done I will take more pictures to show y’all.  So stay tuned!

So what are we doing with our three bedrooms?

Well, the Master Bedroom, is, of course, mine and Simon’s bedroom.

The middle, small bedroom is now the library.  I have even turned the single bed in there into a sort of couch, so come on over and pursue the shelves, grab a book and curl up!  There are even throws if your feet get cold!

And the third bedroom is for guests.  It also has bookshelves in it (as does the hallway), but I think it is still a cozy little place for a guest to spend the night.  Or for me to spend the night when I can’t sleep and don’t want to wake Simon with my tossing and turning.

So I am very satisfied with what we have here.  I think we’ll stay awhile, if the landlord is okay with that.  We’ll see in about 7 months!

The View From the New Flat

God, all this depression talk, is depressing me.  🙂  Time to move on to something else for a bit.

The view from the new flat is a brand new building.  Its been finished about 2 or 3 months.  It houses a hotel and a business of some kind.

Occasionally there are very late meetings at the business.  We can see into their big meeting room from our balcony, and I mean very late.  I think it was last week that there were 2 men and 3 women in that room until about 9pm.  Very weird.  Looked kind of like a board meeting, but so late?

Down the street a bit is a health club.  I think about joining it on occasion.  But I doubt I ever will.

This morning the Harbour Police were parked across the street.  Bit out of their jurisdiction, since, not the harbour!  City Centre, actually.  Very strange.

So it isn’t the most beautiful view in the world, from our Flat.  But its ever changing!

Depression and Guilt

The biggest problem, for me, with my depression, is the guilt I start to feel as I start to come out of the black place.

Guilt that my flat is a mess. Guilt that my Admin Team at work has got to be covering for me. Guilt for lying to my parents and saying I was fine, when I was not.

That last one, lying to my parents guilt, is probably the least guilt laden. Not that I enjoy lying to my parents, I don’t, I never have. I have usually told them everything. But I get tired. I get tired of my dad saying ‘how are you really?’ Really? I’m pretty crappy thanks for asking. I also get tired of talking about how I feel. Are you down? Anxious? Happy? Sad? All of the above?

Its exhausting. I know they ask because they care, but it is still exhausting. I have to repeat myself over and over, first telling my mom, and then my dad, how I am really. They’re divorced, so its not like I can say “And now you tell Dad, Mom.” Cuz he isn’t standing there next to her. He’s about 600 miles away!

As for my Admin Team, I think that carries the most guilt. I know they are my friends and are mostly concerned for me, but I know how aggravated I get when one of them is out for a few days and I have to cover for them. I do it, of course, that’s part of being a team, but I bitch about it. I can’t imagine how much they are annoyed at me at the moment. But its probably a lot. And I don’t blame them.

Without me there, some one is covering the CEO. That can be a full time job, depending on what is going on at the moment. I manage to cover him and the DF&A and the DCRE&F when I am there, but its always a juggling act. The answer to the question ‘Robyn, are you busy?’ is ‘I’m always busy, what do you need?’

As for the messy flat?  Its actually not that messy.  Simon and I have a good system for splitting up chores and at least his are getting done!  Mine will get done over the next few days, including the last two book shelves put together and the books unpacked.

But I still feel guilty.

Well, I’ve Been Trying to Update

But we’ve been having technical problems all weekend with the ‘net.  Some sites were available, some were not.  This one was not.

It was some weird Virgin Media thing.  Their ‘engineers were working on the problem’ all freakin’ weekend.

So I spent the weekend putting together flat pack furniture.  Still have two bookcases to go.  But the wall unit in the front room is done.  And half empty.  I need to go buy some more stuff. 😉

Nothing much else to write about.  Been a quiet couple of days.

So I Was Out Shopping Yesterday

Since I took yesterday and today off.  Yesterday was so I could wait for our landlord to do their quarterly ‘inspection.’  Basically I stood there while some chick from their office wandered around.  We have no idea exactly what they were looking for.  But I guess we passed.

So then I went shopping.  I popped over and picked up the two pairs of boots I just had resoled.  They both now look brand new.  Then I wandered through House of Fraser.  Always up for a little retail therapy, I wandered into their lingerie section.  They have some beautiful things.  Only I didn’t buy any of them.  Why? Because I cannot bring myself to spend £50 on just a bra, when I can get basically the same bra and matching  pants for about £32 at Marks and Spencer.  Just crazy prices.

So I left House of Big Spending and went over to M&S.  And got two sets for…£32.  I really can’t see House of Fraser making it in this town.

Today I had to stay home and wait for our Argos delivery.  Which has now arrived.  Four more bookcases and 3 cubes.  The cubes go together to make a display/storage cabinet for the dining area of the front room.  And with four bookcases, Simon and I will actually have room for not only the books we own, but more books to buy!

So, the hope is to have everything but together and then filled with stuff by Sunday night.  And then, finally, we’ll be unpacked.

Who wants to come to the house warming party?

Well, I Wouldn’t Call it Bad Customer Service

But it sure is annoying.

You see, we have several bookcases and a display case being delivered tomorrow by Argos.  Between 7am and 6pm.  So I called to see if I could get a smaller delivery window.  Say, 7 – 12 or something.  Nope, can’t be done.  They have no way of knowing what time the things will be delivered.

I wouldn’t exactly call this *bad* customer service.  But it certainly isn’t good customer service.

How hard could it be to give me a smaller window? They must know, at this point on the day before, what else is scheduled for delivery in Belfast tomorrow.  So why can’t they narrow it down for me?

When we purchased our washer/dryer, I was given about the same delivery time. But I was also given a number to call the day before to get it narrowed down.  So Curry’s for the win on that one.

I am going to be home all day, regardless.  But now I won’t be able to do *anything* without worrying about missing the delivery.  Not even pee.  So thank god for cordless phones, I guess.

But, really, Argos, you should try and narrow it down for people.  It would be very helpful.

The Schizophrenic Lift

So, the lift in our building has mental issues.

It has one of those mechanical voices to tell you what floor you are on.  No problem, right? Wrong.

The day we moved in it called our floor, the 6th, the 2nd Sub-Basement.  There isn’t even one sub-basement in our building, never mind two.

Then, on occasion, it announces the third floor, as you ride past it.  Not when stopping at it, just to note that it is there, I guess.

Oh, and it always says going down.  Even when you are at the basement.

I really hope there are no sight impaired people in our building.  Cuz they would never get the right floor.
